Google Ads for auto repair shops that fill the bays.
An oil change and a transmission repair compete for your ad budget, but they need different amounts of bay time. We separate those searches so routine maintenance doesn't swallow the money meant for major repairs.
Short version: Run Google Ads for auto repair shops around the work your technicians can take: separate transmission, brake and maintenance searches, then track which calls become booked repairs. Transmission bids reach $10.00 in the Keyword Planner figures below. Give that work its own budget, exclude parts shoppers, and tell Google which leads actually put a vehicle in your bay.

Oil changes bring 1,500,000 monthly searches, but transmission repair reaches the highest bid at $10.00 despite drawing just 165,000 searches. The busiest search isn't the most expensive opportunity. We give transmission work its own campaign so oil-change volume can't consume its budget.
How we structure an auto repair account
- Transmission work gets a separate budget. Ads distinguish diagnosis from repair and replacement, matching the transmission work your shop accepts.
- Oil changes have their own lane. Maintenance ads speak to drivers booking routine service. Their spending stays separate from brake and transmission campaigns.
- Brake calls match your openings. A driver with grinding brakes needs to know when you can inspect the car. Ads reflect your service desk hours and appointment availability.
- Vehicle fit comes before the click. We separate fleet work from personal vehicles and exclude diesel, European or other specialist searches your technicians don't handle.
- Diagnosis leads stay identifiable. A check-engine inquiry is traced through to the booked appointment. Your report separates those customers from callers buying an oil change.
Searches we keep you from paying for
Repair terms also attract applicants, home mechanics and parts buyers, so we check the wording behind each click:
| Kind of search | Example |
|---|---|
| Job seekers | auto mechanic jobs, transmission technician openings |
| DIY | how to replace brake pads at home |
| Parts or supplies | transmission rebuild kit, brake rotors for sale |
| Services you may not offer | mobile diesel repair, if your shop doesn't provide it |
| Free code scans | free check engine light scan at auto parts store |
A driver seeking a free code scan hasn't asked for a paid diagnosis. We keep that search separate from someone ready to book diagnostic labor.
When auto repair demand moves
Across these Keyword Planner searches, demand peaks in October at 4,343,400 and bottoms out in April at 2,697,900, a 1.6x spread. Car AC repair follows a different calendar, peaking in July and reaching its low in September. Brake repair peaks in January and bottoms out in April. We shift the existing repair budget toward those service peaks; any increase in total spending waits for a person.
Google's rules for auto repair shops
Google's US Local Services list includes Auto Repair Shop, with separate categories for Brake Shop, Transmission Shop and Oil Change, so we check the category against your actual services (Google's category list). Since August 2026, Google has been moving existing Local Services Ads into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals, with auto repair in the first phase (Google's migration guidance). Those ads still appear only on Google Search and Maps and remain pay per lead (Google's guidance). Auto categories can run Local Services Ads, but the Google Verified badge is currently unavailable for them (Google's category guidance).
