Home improvement contractor marketing

Google Ads for contractors who sell projects.

A homeowner replacing windows has a different budget from someone hiring a handyman to fix a door. Bigger projects also take longer to decide on, so an estimate request needs to be followed through to a signed job.

Short version: Build Google Ads for contractors around separate services, then track estimates through to booked projects. Window replacement bids reach $92.13 in the Google Keyword Planner figures below, so a window inquiry cannot be judged like a handyman call. Keep small repairs apart from larger installations, and send booked projects back to Google so estimate requests do not stand in for customers.

Windows and decks draw the same 60,500 monthly searches, but window bids reach $92.13 while deck bids stop at $38.49. Equal demand does not mean equal buying costs. We give window replacement its own campaign and budget, then judge its estimate pipeline against booked window jobs instead of mixing it with deck inquiries.

How we structure a home improvement contractor account

  • Each project gets matching ads. Deck searches lead with deck building, window searches with replacement, and fence searches with installation. Broad contractor wording does not explain which job you want.
  • Handyman work stays separate. Door adjustments and small repairs should not draw from the same budget as siding or window installations. We separate the searches and track their booked jobs apart.
  • Estimate requests stay attached to the project. A deck buyer may compare materials and quotes before signing. We trace the inquiry to its ad and report the booked project back to Google.
  • Homeowners and commercial buyers get different messages. A backyard fence and a property manager's gutter project need different scope details. We advertise the customer types and buildings your crew serves.
  • Ads fit the work you can schedule. Planned siding replacement gets an estimate message. Handyman ads reflect the repair work you accept, without promising emergency service your crew cannot provide.

Searches we keep you from paying for

When home improvement contractor demand moves

Google Keyword Planner puts combined demand highest in September at 568,800 searches and lowest in November at 331,500, a 1.7x spread. The services move differently: decks peak in August and bottom out in November, while gutters peak in October and bottom out in April. Window replacement peaks in September and reaches its low in December. We shift the existing budget toward each service's busy period and reduce its allocation as demand falls, keeping deck, gutter and window schedules separate.

Google's rules for home improvement contractors

Google lists General contractor as a US Local Services Ads category. Since August 2026, Google has been moving existing Local Services Ads into Google Ads as Performance Max campaigns with pay-per-lead goals, with this trade in the first phase; these ads still appear only on Google Search and Maps and remain pay per lead. Google also names an unlicensed home contractor claiming to be licensed as misleading representation, so licensing claims in contractor ads must match the business.
